Kenta Anzai
Kenta Anzai
Fukushima prefecture based ceramicist Kenta Anzai is part of an outstanding lineage of renowned Japanese artisans. His work is a perfect example of the Wabi Sabi aesthetic in Japanese pottery.
His porcelain vessels and moon jars are covered with a black glaze infused with a small amount of urushi, a natural Japanese lacquer that originates as tree sap. The use of urushi dates back to 5000 years ago, when it was used for Jomon pots. The aged surface is achieved through a months long proces of continuous polishing and refining. Giving each piece a uniquely detailed surface pattern to contrast with the simple forms.
